Here at WVU Medicine Children’s, we understand that if your child has kidney disease such as kidney failure, nephrotic syndrome, recurrent kidney and bladder infections, kidney stones, or bedwetting, you’ll have a lot of questions.
Our team of acute and chronic kidney disease specialists includes pediatric nephrologists and nurse practitioners. We partner with urologists, surgeons, psychologists, nutritionists, and social workers to provide comprehensive care for patients, including newborns and those up to age 22. We are members of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology.
Conditions We Treat
As a parent, you’ll find a kid-focused treatment team that helps you navigate the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery process. Whether your child faces a complex condition or one that is more easily managed, we’ll be by your side. We offer advanced pediatric nephrology care for congenital and acquired kidney diseases and conditions, including: * Bedwetting (enuresis) * Chronic urinary tract infections * Congenital problems with kidney and urinary tract such as hydronephrosis, solitary kidney, horseshoe kidneys, urinary reflux * Diabetes-related kidney disease * End-stage kidney disease, or renal failure * Hemolytic uremic syndrome * Henoch Schonlein Purpura * High blood pressure * Immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy * Kidney disease due to ANCA vasculitis * Kidney stones, either primary or secondary to seizure medications * Lupus * Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) * Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis
Treatments and Services
Treatment depends on your child’s condition. We’ll talk with you about the options that best meet his or her needs. We offer advanced treatment and services, including: * Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring * Biopsy * Chemotherapy modified to treat autoimmune diseases like lupus and ANCA vasculitis * Chronic renal replacement therapy (CRRT) * Injection therapy for patients with X-Linked hypophosphatemic rickets and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) * Dialysis, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis * Nutrition counseling * Plasmapheresis * Prenatal counseling for those expecting a child with kidney and or urinary tract issues * Psychological counseling and support services
If you have a high-risk pregnancy, or if we find your unborn baby has a kidney or urinary tract disorder, we offer prenatal counseling to help you understand what you can expect before, during, and after your baby’s birth. We work with your obstetrician to help ensure a healthy delivery of your baby.
