Emergency Medicine

If you or your child needs urgent medical care, please go immediately to your nearest emergency room. If you are unable to get to the closest hospital yourself, call 911 right away. Otherwise, you may want to talk with your doctor before going to the emergency room or visit your nearest urgent care clinic.

The WVU Medicine Center for Emergency Medicine at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital is the “front door” for sick and injured patients from across our region, both pediatric and adult.

Our pediatric emergency department specializes in providing emergency care for any serious injury or illness your child may experience. In this child-friendly and family-focused environment, our trained pediatric specialists provide the highest level of care available.

Child life specialists work alongside our physicians, nurses, and technicians, bringing expertise and training in practices and methods that guide your child through the emergency department experience. These include distraction techniques, developmentally appropriate educational tools, and play therapy. We also use sedation for select procedures to ensure the best possible result with the least amount of trauma.

We provide access to pediatric specialists who are experts in all major subspecialties your child might need in an emergency.
