Critical Care Services

The Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PICU) is composed of 19 beds, one treatment bed, and five stepdown beds and serves patients admitted for cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, orthopaedics, and serious illnesses.
.
All patients requiring intensive care are admitted to the pediatric critical care service or to a surgical service with pediatric co-management.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is our 39-bed, high-risk unit for premature infants and low birth weight newborns. Most are born at WVU Children’s Hospital but some arrive via ambulance or helicopter. An average of 450 premature infants (some weighing less than 2 pounds) are admitted to the NICU each year. These babies stay from a week to more than 300 days. Many require support or surgery in the first few days of life. Highly specialized neonatologists work closely with our obstetricians, surgeons, respiratory specialists, advanced practice, and neonatal trained nurses for optimum care.

The Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center is one of only 31 facilities in the U.S. recognized by the American College of Surgeons for providing the highest level of trauma care for both children and adults. It is staffed 24 hours a day by a full range of surgical and medical specialists.

Our Neonatal and Pediatric Transport teams offer transportation of critically ill pediatric patients from referral sites throughout West Virginia and surrounding areas to WVU Children’s Hospital in Morgantown. The team is available 24/7 for rapid response to requests for ground (pediatric) and ground and air (neonatal) medical transport. We serve a patient population ranging from newborn to age 18.
